Entrepreneurs Should Never Stop Reading

There are many superstar entrepreneurs who will emerge in the future, the real entrepreneurs of our day, never stop reading, learning and observing. If you wish to replace their ranks, then perhaps you might also learn from them. It is advisable to read trade journals, industry related books, marketing strategies and also have some older business books in your library to round out your knowledge base.

Today, I took three books out of my business library and read thru them, mostly scanning, but also reading a few chapters in each and reflecting on their reality, and on the current situation in business and what has changed; surprisingly enough, not much has changed. Let's discuss these books:

"Infopreneurs - Turning Data Into Profit" by H. Skip Weitzen - 1988. This book is considered a pre-Internet Classic of what the future was to become. No, it did not happen exactly the way Skip cited, but close enough. Information is power for infopreneurship; doing more for less and leveraging the data. The ability to customize information for repackaging and delivery at the speed of thought is essential. The book ends with advice to those who wish to start information companies, the advice is well warranted and reasonable, and so, I recommend this even nearly 20-years later today as a must read if you are starting an information providing company in the information age.

"Staying at the Top - The Life of a CEO" by Sonny Kleinfield - 1986. This work is about the CEO of Avon Corporation Mr. Hick Waldron. The book talks about this hard charger from his work habits, morning workouts, vacations in the sun to all his professional trials and tribulations. Avon Corporation grew fast and strong, but was not without its hard times, shareholder disappointments and press issues.

Many entrepreneurs have come before us and made millions if not billions in the process. Many of their stories are not so different than one currently faces in business. Indeed, it is amazing at the similarity, philosophy, drive and dedication.

"See You at The Top" by Zig Ziglar - 1975. This is one of Zig Ziglars classic books - "The How To book that gives YOU a 'check up' from the 'neck up' to eliminate 'stinkin thinkin' and avoid hardening of attitudes" as he puts it. Yes, and this book eventually sold nearly 2 million copies, a classic indeed, I noticed that my personal business library had two copies? With chapters such as Stairway to the Top, Your Self Image and Your Relationship with Others, Ziggy sets a pace to both motivate and get the reader focused on setting Goals, improving attitude, increasing work output and controlling desire to win in life and at sales.

Interesting that Zig Zigglar, never made much money in actual sales, but later did selling his books, tapes and seminars. An entrepreneur in his own right, perhaps a better entrepreneur than a straight sales person. Still, all entrepreneurs sell something, so you will need to be a spokesman at some point in your career, so you ought to learn from one of the best. Well, that's all for today, thanks for listening, sincerely, Lance.
